European Head of Physiotherapy & Medical Services for the Brooklyn Nets | NBA/Europe

2019-2022

Reflections and Gratitude- The role with the Spurs paved the way to the role with the Nets. The job role and responsibilities remain the same. Visits to places such as Antibes, Paris, Athens, Madrid and Milan mixed with trips across the Atlantic to Brooklyn are so stimulating. Being a small part of the growing and evolving performance team gives great satisfaction. A big thanks to general manager Sean Marks, assistant general manager Andy Birdsong, performance lead Mike Davison, rehabilitation lead Les Gelis and physician Dr Mike Farber.

European Head of Physiotherapy & Medical Services for the San Antonio Spurs | NBA/Europe

2014-2020

Reflections and Gratitude-This was my first journey into working in the NBA and travelling around Europe as their European physiotherapist and point of contact. I got to travel to places such as Lyon, Belgrade and Athens, and got to meet many fascinating people in each place. This was a big challenge having to coordinate care and communication of players based in Europe with their NBA team who drafted them but with the challenge brought massive growth, energy and learning.

Regular visits to San Antonio and a week in Las Vegas during Summer League were other highlights. A big thanks to general manager RC Buford, former head of performance Phil Coles, current head of performance Wayne Diesel and head of rehabilitation Marilyn Adams.

Clinical Director of SoCo Performance Clinic, Dublin

2019

Reflections and Gratitude- This was a lot of fun. I was part of a newly formed multi-disciplinary performance clinic founded by friend and colleague Conor Gavin. This was an ambitious venture and so much was learned about what brings success and failure to a new business. The podcast was born from this clinic as well as workshops such as FNCTN. We were innovative and hungry to be different from other medical and physiotherapy centres. A big thanks to Conor!

Clinical and Cultural Lead Physiotherapist | Isokinetic Medical Group, 11 Harley St., London

2013-2018

Reflections and Gratitude- This was a big step- a game changer for my professional career. I left Dublin and moved to London after an extensive internship in Milan, Italy. I was involved in a pop-up clinic which then became a flagship FIFA Medical Centre for Excellence. I became a cultural leader. I enjoyed being a clinical educator to many international students and loved being a part of a successful multi-disciplinary team.

This was the game changer for my career. I was given the opportunity to speak at numerous international conferences, lecture and be involved in many start-up parts of the clinic such as the “Green Room” movement laboratory. A big thanks to Head of International Mike Davison, president Stefano Della Villa, my mentor Marco Zanobbi and so many great friends within the Isokinetic family- and also my patients…who were so very special. Grazie tutti!

UCD AFC Lead Physiotherapist- League of Ireland

2010-2013

Reflections and Gratitude- This was my first significant opportunity in sports medicine when I was the Head Physiotherapist for the League of Ireland and Leinster Senior League teams. It involved a lot of travel around Ireland and so much learning. Decision making, effective communication and being a part of a medical department and backroom were all points of learning. A big thanks to director of football Diarmuid McNally and manager Martin Russell.

Testimonials - Patients and Colleagues

“David was in charge of my rehabilitation after a full hip replacement. He was exceptionally knowledgable, caring and also great company! I was 36 years old and had been very active all my life, my big concern was if I’d now be able to return to my “normal” way of living and how long it would take. David and I talked this through and I felt he really listened and fully understood my ambitions and worries. He designed an intensive rehab plan for me, and we developed and amended it as we reached various milestones. He was great at pushing me and encouraging me throughout. I was over the moon when I managed to run a few km again eight weeks after the operation and credit him fully with my complete return to fitness. I couldn’t recommend David highly enough.”

— Christian Fallesen, Energy Trader, Venture Capitalist

“David Clancy has looked after my back for several years. Having had an Xstop operation some years ago I have often had a very painful spine. David has helped me with exercises so that I am able to do some of the excellent exercises with him, and then on my own, that mean I am pain free. He understanding, helpful and has a realistic view of what an ancient being can accomplish. If I could I would see him on a daily basis. His common sense attitude is a joy.”

— Lady Eve Pollard, OBE- author, journalist and newspaper editor

“I have worked alongside David for many years, and I can't praise him highly enough. Absolutely excellent clinician, forward-thinking, extremely passionate and delivering high quality treatments based on the latest evidence. A natural leader with great skill and talent.”

— Alessandro Marconato- Head of Rehabilitation, Isokinetic Medical Group, 11 Harley St., London, U.K.

“David is knowledgeable, professional and a pleasure to work with. He was a member of the San Antonio NBA team when I was working with him as a Sports Director of BC Crvena zvezda. At that time he helped our player in the case of very complex sports injurie. David is somebody that I trust because he was very dedicated to his patient. I have great confidence in his expertise as a physical therapist. As a team member or a leader, David earns my highest recommendation.”

— Mirko Pavlovic, Sports Director at BC Dynamic, former GM Red Star Belgrade Basketball

“David is a very experienced clinician, with a diverse and impressive knowledge of musculoskeletal medicine as well as S and C. He quickly forms a strong working relationship with his patients and this ensures that his rehabilitation plans are successful.”

— Dr Matthew Stride, Consultant in Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation Medicine

“I know David from his time in London. One of the best physiotherapists in town. He looked after a lot of my elite professional athletes. If you are an ortho in Dublin you need David in your team.”
